SC/County Taxes
TAXES
South Carolina has one of the lowest per-capita tax rates in the country according to the Bureau of the Census.
STATE INCOME TAX
South Carolinas income tax structure is similar to the federal structure, with only a few differences. Rates begin at 2.5% of taxable income, graduating to 7% on taxable income over $11,400. There is no tax on
intangibles, the sale of property sold in another state, Social Security income or income earned in another state.
STATE SALES TAX
6%, with a maximum of $300 on motor vehicles including boats and planes.
PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX
The county imposes a tax on the value of automobiles, boats and airplanes at a rate of approximately 10.5% times the millage rate for the tax district.
REAL ESTATE TAX
The county assessor establishes the appraised value of all real estate at about 75% of actual value. The assessed value is 4% of appraised value on a primary residence or 6% of appraised value on other real estate. The millage rate is then applied to the assessed value to determine the tax. SC has a homestead exemption of $20,000 off the appraised value for residents 65 and older. Of the fifteen most-movied-to locations in the state, southern Beaufort County has the second lowest tax rate.
